Dear Mother Nature,
On this 40th anniversary of Earth Day, I’d like to apologize for my family’s lack of environmental concern. They waste water (read this post so you can fully understand my dilemma), refuse to recycle, and leave lights on all over the house all day long. I’ve tried to encourage them to do better, but my efforts fall on deaf ears.
Please don’t don’t send any lightning bolts our way or swallow us in a sinkhole. I will eventually convince them to do better.
In the meantime, I will continue to do my part to help the environment by riding the bus to work, recycling household items, using reusable bags at the grocery store, unplugging my chargers when I’m not using them, and picking up trash around my neighborhood.
I hope my meager efforts will offset the destruction that my family is causing.
Sincerely,
Question: How have you incorporated a greener lifestyle into your home?

Every little bit helps. I’ve lately begun to think about ways we can be even less wasteful. Thanks for yet another reminder that this is the place we’re passing on to our children.

I think Mother Nature will forgive you. We do our part by never leaving items that are not in use plugged in. We use our own bags at the grocery store. We are trying…really trying to stop buying bottled water. We use natural light as much as possible. And lately, I’ve switched to “green” cleaning products.

It is difficult to remain so conscientious, but we all have to do our part no matter how big or small. I practically have to staple our reusable shopping bags to my hands to remember to bring them with me when I go grocery shopping.

We do our part. We don’t drive three Hummers, just one minivan. We make our own pizza rather than having them delivered in a big box that will just end up in a landfill. We don’t ride bikes or anything, because that would make us breathe a lot more, and release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. We buy beer in recyclable glass bottles. Lots of it. We painted our bedrooms rainforest green. I’m sure that counts for something.

man, the carbon footprint…(LOL)
we actually just started getting better ourselves about a year ago. what amazes me is the amount of stuff in the wrong recycle bins. i don’t understand how that works…of particular confusion seems to be cardboard vs. mixed paper.

I think you’ll be forgiven. Just keep trying. No effort is too small. If you’re looking for some more ways, check out Save the Planet Saturdays over on my blog. I try to post a tip or an idea every Saturday. We’re not perfect at our house either, the blog just makes it look like it.

You should visit Korea and see how they split up their trash and food waste into recyclables. They have something like 6 different containers and hold themselves strictly to them. Coolest thing I’ve seen in a while.
