Freeway of Love

My 6-year-old son, N, and I share a love of cars. I guess we get it from my father who was an amateur race car driver and car enthusiast himself. I still remember the sounds of the roaring engines and scents of burning rubber, gasoline, and dirt.

But I recently discovered something that N likes even more than cars. Oddly enough, I made my discovery at the Houston Auto Show.

Is this a car or is it a robot in disguise?

N and I have attended the show each year since he was three. We enjoy sitting in the driver’s seats of luxury and sports cars pretending we are driving down the open road.

When we entered the arena, N made a B-line to the Transformers branded Camaro.

“Daddy,” he said. “I wonder if this car can transform into Bumblebee.”

“I doubt it,” I said. “But it would be cool if it could.”

N's Dream Car

After realizing the Camaro was only a car, N darted to his favorite piece of machinery – a red 2010 Lotus Exige.

“I want one of those, Daddy,” he said jumping and pointing.

“So do I, son,” I said. “So do I.”

Since neither of us could afford a new Lotus we moved on to my favorite part of the show – the classic car display. Of course my son burst my bubble when he said, “Daddy those cars aren’t cool. They’re old.”

After we made the loop around the arena, I noticed the Jeep display in the corner.

1966 Mustang - If this car were a woman, I'd marry it.

“Let’s go and look at the Jeeps,” I said.

“I don’t really like Jeeps, Dad,” he said. “I’d rather look at some other cars.”

“Just humor me for a minute,” I said. “A Jeep was the first automobile I bought and I want to reminisce for a minute.”

“Okay, fine,” he said.

We took pictures in the Wranglers and Grand Cherokees as I remember the good times I had in my Jeep. Soon my trip down memory lane was over and it was time to leave. As I walked to the next automaker’s display, I noticed that N was lagging behind. I walked back to where he was standing and grabbed his arm.

“C’mon son,” I said. “I’m done. We can go now.”

“Wait a minute, Daddy,” he said. “I’m not ready to go.”

“I thought you said you didn’t like Jeeps,” I said. “What is it that you want to see?”

Not the actual model, but you get the picture

My question was answered as an attractive spokesmodel stepped to the platform to talk about the new Jeeps. N was mesmerized.

“Daddy, can we wait here a minute?” he asked. “I’d like to hear what she has to say.”

“Why do you care what she has to say?” I said. “You don’t like Jeeps. Remember?”

“Shhh, Daddy,” he said. “I can’t hear.”

I just shook my head as we listened and learned. Something tells me that N’s first car will also be a Jeep.

Stay Strong,

Tell me about your first car or your first crush.

I find it so cool that you have daddy-son time at car shows. We are car enthusiasts and appreciate the story. My first car was a Honda Civic… I loved that little car. The a/c didn’t worked but it didn’t matter because it had cruise control… so rare to find in Puerto Rico in the 80s. Ah, the memories. Boys will be boys, huh?

Oh my… that is priceless!

We got a ’90 Plymouth Laser for our son for his first car. It’s been a project for him and his dad. It’s been a great way for them to bond over a love of cars.

I still wish I had my first car, a candy-apple red ’67 Mustang.

I wish I had your first car too.

My son is crazy about cars, trucks, planes, trains…anything that has wheels and can go fast. He’s only 5 and already wants to drive. When NASCAR is on TV he sits mezmerized. And don’t let us be stopped at a railroad. He has to loosen his seatbelt and sit up so he can stare at the train passing by.

My first car was a Honda Civic. It didn’t have any power steering. It overheated and caught on fire on the NJ Turnpike while I was driving it. Flames were actually shooting out of the hood.

My first crush was Kenny Rogers. Specifically, Kenny Rogers from Six Pack. He was such a hero, and I wanted someone that could take on kids like that. That’s the kind of Dad u wanted my kids to have. I was only 7 or so at the one, and I didn’t realize how old he was, lol!

What do you think of the post plastic surgery Kenny Rogers?

My first car was a ’71 mustang. I called it lime green, but everyone else called it puke green. Loved that car. My first crush was Dee and she sat next to me in that car.

It reminded me of the movie “Dude, Where’s My Car.” Everyone is in the amusement park when the evil aliens turn into a sexy giant with a bikini. She walks around there and a kid says to his father, “Dad, I want to go on THAT ride,” and the father says, “So do I, Son, so do I.”

Glad you told me to come visit tonight; I’m so far behind in my reader it’s not even funny.

I will fight you to the death for that 1966 Mustang. Just sayin’.

Have you introduced N to NASCAR yet???? If not, when you do, you might want to keep him away from the Nationwide series or he’ll be wanting you to browse the internet for pictures of Danica. Something no 6-year old should see. Good place to hang out and talk cars is http://www.rowdy.com. Mostly NASCAR but the photos of the old cars some folks post are awesome.

First car was a pale yellow 66 Ford Galaxie 500. I can still smell it today.

He loves NASCAR. He can pick out all of the drivers as the cars race around the track.

I’m having a feeling he wasn’t interested in what she was saying at all. LOL

This post made me smile. I hope you quizzed him on all that she said about the Jeeps, given his newfound “Jeep interest” :D

19 Mocha Dad February 23, 2010 at 9:49 am

My wife quizzed me.

I love this! Some things just come natural. Thanks for the morning giggle.

I can’t wait to take my son to the car show. The one here in Charlotte probably isn’t anything near like the one you have in Houston, but it’s always fun to go and daydream. Much to the dismay of my wife I have a new favorite car every other week.

22 Mocha Dad February 23, 2010 at 9:46 am

Perhaps you should get a tricked-out minivan.

23 magpie February 24, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Funny.
My first car was a Ford Fiesta. It was a dear little car. Really. I get weepy thinking about it.

My first car was a miserable little Camry that my uncle had already worn out. I loved it for about 6 months before it died.

My first crush was a young man at the church I belong to. I was about 10? He was so nice and kind to everyone, he’d volunteer at church functions and -gasp-would joke around with me! I was so smitten, I even told my mom he was “the one”. She laughed and explained that it would not be proper for a 22 year old to date a 10 year old. Nonetheless, my crush continued. The highlight of that year was when I was allowed to dance with him once at a Church mixer. I was on cloud nine. So imagine my dismay when a few months later I found out he was engaged to be married! Oh how I cried into my pillow. The betrayal! The deceit.
Now I realize he was just being nice because I had such a crush on him. He still belongs to my church and I run into him from time to time. He still does tease me about my crush on occaision!

That’s awesome. The kid has good taste. I’m sure you’ll make sure he sets his priorities as well.
