An Artistic Journey

One Sunday afternoon, my daughter, Nee, drew this portrait of me.

It’s a striking resemblance isn’t it? We often sit at the kitchen table and draw pictures together. Sometimes we draw each other. Here is my drawing of her.

Other times, we draw fantastical scenes with fairies, dinosaurs, puppies and superheroes. If we can think it, we can draw it.

When I was her age, I loved art. Heck, I still love art, but back then there was so much wonder and amazement when I watched the picture in my head to come to life on a piece of paper.

After listening to my art teacher’s stories of Harlem Renaissance artists such as Henry Tanner, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden, my life’s goal was to be a famous artist. I honed my craft whenever I could. Art supply stores were like Toys ‘R’ Us to me. My artistic skills developed to the point that started entering contests. I won my fair share of first place ribbons until I met my nemesis – Tony Cool (yes, that is his real name). Not only did he have the best name ever, but he was also immensely talented. He brought my winning streak to an end. But I’m proud to say that this minor setback didn’t diminish my love for drawing. I still have scores of sketchpads that chronicle my artistic journey over the years.

I was so pleased when Nee expressed an interest in art. She loves her art class at school and is always eager to tell me about the new projects that they are working on. When my son, N, was born, I was looking forward to grooming another little artist. It turns out that he has absolutely no interest in art. Nil. Nada. He cannot stand the solitude of drawing. He would much rather do something more stimulating like jumping off the stairs or watching old episodes of Thundercats.

Thankfully, my one-year-old, X, has inherited my artistic trait. He likes to join Nee and me at the table and color pages from his Sesame Street coloring book.

I’m proud to display the kids’ artwork on our refrigerator and through the house on walls and door. My wife, KayEm, has even started a scrapbook to preserve these precious memories.

Sharing this legacy of art has been rewarding in ways I cannot explain. Beating Tony Cool in an art contest couldn’t even compare to this feeling.

Stay Strong,

Question: What do you do with your child’s artwork?

You can check out Lil’s masterpieces from the above and I have tons more from what he does at home. He is turning 6 this June and he loves art as much he loves me, i guess. Haha!! He draws something new everyday and everytime I return home from work, I’m greeted by rants about what he has drawn earlier and he can’t wait to show me. I always feel he has an artistic side in him which I’m truly not sure where he got that from because I can’t draw for nuts. Whatever it is, he never fails to amaze me with all his makings.

We probably have nearly every piece of art drawn by our two kids. I also have many taped on my desk in my home office. Great memories.

Great work guys! I’d say those are frame-worthy.

So, where do we put all the artwork once the refrigerator is full and we have no wall space left?!? We are running out of space!

Beautiful! We have an entire wall in our kitchen dedicated to the girls’ art work… they’re all framed, which makes already beautiful work look STUNNING. We switch out the pictures every few months to keep it fresh… it really makes them proud of their work, and encourages them to keep working at getting better… Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence are BIG TIME favorites over here. Thanks for sharing your love of art!

I love this post!!! This is exactly how I spent my childhood, drawing, painting and making crafts. I was going through my memento box yesterday, which still houses a lot of my childhood drawings, and I’ve made sure to save boxes of my son’s artwork for him to look back on.
Since my artwork was not of the caliber of Tony Cool ;-) I quickly realized I could not make a career of it, but I’ve been lucky to find a job at an art gallery, where I come across the occasional Bearden piece and can admire the artwork of others all day long.
You and your daughter are both quite talented!! Thanks for sharing your drawings..

Great stuff man! What an artistic flair you guys have. I used to love to color and draw also and I think my oldest, my daughter who is 6, picked that up from me also. She gets really into it though. Like on most things she has to color, she will make the whole picture look like a church stained glass window! Tons of different colors and shapes inside the lines in a small area….. Never seen anything like it before, but I think it’s cool. That’s the way she sees it and that is how she chooses to express her artistic side.

Ohhhh and X’s talent deserves much recognition as well! He and my Lil One must be going to the same art school and abstract must be the lesson du jour!! I have to say our family loves fine art as well. It’s cool to see the little ones develop their own appreciation of such things.

OK, to answer your question; at the risk of sounding like a bad parent I must be honest. I don’t keep every piece of “art” work my 3 children make. More often than not, I throw it away. I save the things they make me for Mothers Day, or stuff that was a special project in school. My 11 year old made a special piece of art work when she was just 5, I still have it. Every time I see it, it brings a smile to my face. Nothing about me is artistic. Thank God for giving my children a God Mother who is. She encourages their artistic behavior and works on many of projects with them. Thanks Amy Beth Hite.

Thanks for the visit, Mocha Dad! Even though I had a bit of trouble with drawing, I loved art stores for the potential I felt. All the tubes of paint, the pens, the blank canvasses and sketch pads. The smell of the stores still makes my heart lift, and I’m glad you’re able to share this with the majority of your kids. Speaking as a kid who never quite managed to put color to paper, N may never delve into drawing, but he will probably appreciate that you exposed him to art.

Most of my kids artwork from school is in a drawer on the hopefull plan that someday I will put it it a scrapbook, but seeing as I am 15 years behind in my scrapbooking, it will probably stay in the drawer.

Those pictures are so cute, especially the coloring of Elmo – brings back memories. Well, fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree does it? I kept the artwork of the boys when they were younger and then it got to be too much. Now, at 13 and 11, when they draw something they keep it themselves. Whew…what a relief!
